De- mankifiying a Phil and Teds

Despite my best efforts the covers of my Phil and Teds E3 explorer are getting manky. The instructions only mandate spot cleaning with mild detergent. This hasn't made much difference. Do I dare bunging it in the washing machine? Has anyone done this? Have also thought about using a steam cleaner.
Any tips please

well I've taken the covers off and scrubbed them with hot water and washing up liquid which worked quite well.Did that outside so didt make a mess in the house
