Help rescue my saucepan....!

Help! Was being totally Nigella this afternoon, and boiling up home-made stock to reduce it for gravy...however, got distracted by dd's science homework (making a model of a cell!) and forgot about the pan...

So now the house smells, and my good stainless steel pan has a thick black layer of sticky carbon on the base. I've been soaking it in biological powder for a couple of hours, but it doesn't seem to be shifting - any bright ideas? Please?!

(Cell homework turned out fine, though!)

I did this last week, and i put a cupful of bio powder in it and some boiling hot water and left it for 2 days and then it just wiped right off.

Soak it with a can of coca cola (full sugar version) for a couple of hours. It should magically become clean any shiny again. dread to think what it does to stomachs...
