I seem to have a choice between ££££ to get someone in to deal with them or c. £8 on a can of spray. Has anyone successfully illuminated them themselves?

What did you do and what did you use?

yes, dealt with them in the house of an elderly relative.

lots and lots and lots of hoovering, preferably with an upright (beating action) especially around the edges, under and behind furniture. They like to crawl under the cap at the skirting.

I used a spray, own-brand from Supermarket, but I looked at the ingredients in the "ant and crawling insect sprays" first and used a pump-spray rather than an aerosol, it contained Cypermethrin, it may have been in the gardening section. The aerosol sprays work out more expensive and contain less. It breaks down with sunlight and water so re-treat after a few weeks when it will be fading and new eggs may have hatched.

I left the room closed up while I went out to prevent fumes escaping, and opened the windows to air it out on my return.

You might see powders but the vac will suck them out.

If you want to be chemical-free, the heat from a steam cleaner will work but you need to do it repeatedly and lots of vacuuming. I would not use chemicals in a child's bedroom unless they were away on holiday.
