Handheld vacuum - Dyson or G Tech?

Which is best?! I have a very noisy large Hoover which makes DS cry and wakes him so my hoovering is limited. I need something to sort the kitchen floor (Baby Led Weaning!) every night/between meals, stairs and the living room floor where he roams. Bedrooms etc can just get a big vacuum at the weekend.

I've got the handheld Dyson - use it for whizzing around kitchen (slate) floor and wooden floors in rest of ground floor. I love it!!! It would be tragic to say it changed my life.....but it has made it easier!!

I have a hand held Dyson which I can't criticize badly enough - but I think it is one of the (renownedly awful) first generation models so I'd be interested to hear responses about the newer ones. At the moment, I generally just make do with a broom/dustpan and brush for floors and fairly flat surfaces and catch up with other surfaces on the regular vacuums with the main cleaners. They seem to do the trick as substitutes.

I have the g tech and the hand held for the stairs. 350 for both on their website. Very happy. Does what it says efficiently.

Gtech. Though not had dyson. LOVE the gtech. Have both cordless. I don't often rave about cleaning implements but by fllor get the once over more often.

Have a handheld Dyson and I LOVE it. It's so easy to get crumbs or the odd thing that catches your eye (Hama beads, loom bands, general toddler crap). It also comes with a stair/upholstery attachment which means I can hoover the stairs in 5 mins....no joke.

I actually think they should put one of these things in the Bounty bags, prob the most useful thing I have ever bought since having the kids.

I know someone who has the Dyson and thinks it's the best thing ever. She has a huge house,4 children and a few pets so is using it all the time for quick clean-ups rather than lugging the main vacuum all round the place.

When we went for Xmas drinks at their house she had all the women around here whilst she demonstrated it and said how she couldn't live without it she may have had a mulled wine or two at the time.

I think I'll go for the Dyson, I really just need it for making sure the kitchen floor maintains some cleanliness and making sure DS doesn't have anything to eat off the living room floor :)

I have the latest Dyson (DC59, I think) and its awesome. I used to hate lugging the big Hoover out so rarely did. Now I whizz around and can give the whole house a once over in about 20 minutes. Best £270 I've ever spent.

G tech all the way. We have a Pet vacuum cleaner and the G Tech picks up more hair. Definitely a Best Buy.
Have a Dyson hand held. Useless .. Battery life is about 5 minutes.

GTech ( though might not solve your noise issues as our cats leg it when I turn it on).

My friend has the Dyson and we had a dust busting battle to see which was better (my car - oh how I benefitted). She is now wants mine.

God it's good. The attachments for the car cleaning aren't cheap but worth it as I have managed to clean the cables and wires behind the TV. And also now able to get all the bits of dust gathering on the lego models my children make and refuse to dismantle forever.

I love the little bars telling me how much power is left.

Re dyson battery - it's 15 mins on standard, a bit less if you use the boost (which I don't because I forget I've got it and never need it really)

I initially thought 15ins sounded low but 15mins actual hoovering is a long time. Given you're usually using it just for quick bursts when you have a patch of crumbs or whatever, you're talking seconds at a time. The longest I use it for is the stairs, but that's 5 mins max. It's not meant to replace the main hoover.

How long do the batteries last what with recharging? I've usually found that they can be great when new but that the battery performance tails off quite dramatically after a few recharges - and the cost of new rechargeable batteries can be quite high.

I've had the dc59 for about 18 months and recently managed to damage part of it, phoned dyson and part is on its way as still under warranty and dyson customer service is excellent. I have been lent a gtech in the meantime and have to admit was scared I'd prefer it as my friend loves it.
I can happily confirm the dyson wins hands down. It's my only vacuum normally and we have a large 4 bed house with hard floors and carpet and as I vacuum frequently there's no problem with battery life. I can do all the floors on one charge.
Pickup of large crumbs is no better on the Gtech and I think the dyson is excellent for pet hair and dust anyway but it really wins on flexibility. I can do stairs, skirting, blinds, coving etc all with one machine and its low enough to go under sofas. The Gtech feels clumsy in comparison and does floors only.
The dysons not perfect but it's the best all round vacuum I've ever owned.

This is all most interesting because having dropped my old Dyson handheld on a hard floor last night (please don't ask about the circumstances) and seen assorted bits fly off in all directions, I'm now actually in the market for a new one. It looks as though the Dyson is just winning out then?

Just bought a Dyson upright to go alongside our handheld. Had hoovered midweek and it still filled the canister twice! Main issue with handheld is short operation time.

There is a piece with the upright which looks as if it attaches to hold the tools but no instructions as to how/where, any ideas?

I've got both dysons dc59 animal

The vac is excellent at picking up! But to me personally doing the stairs with it is a pain, with the long tube whilst doing it it's annoying as the vac sometimes falls to one side when stretching the pipe.

So for this reason I got the dc59 animal handheld, best thing ever done.
It's so easy now, and whizzing round for light clean up is great.
Wish the battery lasted longer though! As if you forget to put back on charge it doesn't last long the next time. All in all though great, think it was £349

I think the Dc59 has been renamed the V6 and is currently £299 on the Dyson website.
