I've just moved to a new house/area and become a SAHM for the first time. Previously we have always had a cleaner/ironing service. The house is quite big- 5bed/3 bathrooms. I have two DC aged 2 & 7. I'm struggling to figure out how to keep the house as clean as the cleaners do!
Should I have a routine? Should I do it all at once? I'm fine with the day to day tidying that needs to be done, and am feeling pretty busy as it is.
I wanted to ask mumsnetters for tips on house cleaning routines!

Place marking! I could do with tips too.

So far in just managing by clearing floors and work spaces and giving things a wipe down/vacuum, but need tips on getting the deep cleaning done.

Due a dc2 in November, so might just give in and get a cleaner!

Ive been a sahm since February. Have 2 dcs aged 3 and a hairy dog. 3 bedrooms one bathroom. My routine is mondays-change and wash all bed linen and dog bed. Clean kitchen, bathroom, polish downstairs and upstairs and hoover entire house. Tuesdays-fuck all Grin. Wednesdays-clean kitchen and bathroom and hoover downstairs. Every other Thursday- iron any built up things in basket. I iron very little apart from uniforms as and when all the bloody time but the odd things, usually dh things, need it so I dump them in a basket until my next ironing Thursday and if that's 2 weeks away it just stays there until then. I usually have 10 things to iron at the most. Every other Thursday I also take the cushions off the sofa and shake and vac them. The Thursdays opposite I do erm, fuck all Grin. Fridays-fuck all Grin. Saturdays-clean kitchen and bathroom and hoover downstairs. Sunday-fuck all. Ok not exactly fuck all. Every day I wipe surfaces repetitively, wipe around loo sometimes put bleach down. Wipe up spills. Continuously clear away clutter and have a place for everything. Everything broken is binned or fixed. I load dishwasher throughout day so no dishes lying around. Put dishwasher on last thing at night empty whilst dc eat breakfast, ready to load as soon as they finish! Put wash on every evening. I do FAR too much washing, its my downfall. I literally empty the basket every evening so put one wash on before bed and time one for 4.30am (one dark wash, one white) ready to hang first thing in the am. I put it away after tea every day or it builds up. I certainly dont recommend it. Its an area I need to cut back on and Im going to try Blush. Thats it as a routine really. Things like mopping, sweeping, cleaning windows etc I do when I think it needs it though I do have an outside window cleaner. For deeper cleans like washing cupboards, curtains, duvets, etc I read it should be done at every season change so four times a year. I do it once a year though! My house is tidy and clean enough yet I feel like I dont do much. Its hard with young dc too. Set a standard and work out how to acheive it. I only clean bedrooms on Mondays as dh works permanent nights and its the only day he isn't sleeping in there! Another day could work for you. My standard is clean and tidy but not high. I can't, and dont wish to, meet high standards. Saying that I do try and keep on top of things by sticking to a routine. If I let it go I feel crappy! Op do you need to 'clean' all rooms? Can U just occasionally wipe down, hoover those not in use much? Like every month at the most? When we had spare bedrooms I really didn't clean them much at all just kept them tidy and presentable and tried not to use them as a dumping ground like under the stairs. That way you only have a few rooms to get into a routine. I dont have much on surfaces etc either to make it easier to clean. Long essay sorry...obviously I just love talking about cleaning now should actually do some.

minesapintofwine · 25/04/2015 14:27

BlushI am not sure why I didn't use paragraphs sorry

Ive thought of another thing! I do have a routine but dont stress it. I still need to clean bathroom today and probably will but if I dont for whatever reason I will not make a point of it. Just wait until the next 'cleaning bathroom' day which is Monday. Even if I have no plans on Sunday (I don't). As I do wipe and tidy, wipe and tidy, wipe and tidy....the surface is always presentable anyway. I just like to use more elbow grease on those days.

DuchessFanny · 25/04/2015 14:42

I have 3 floors, but only do the top floor when I have the energy, as this is the DSs bedrooms and playroom.( and they're old enough to change beds, clean and tidy their own mess really !)

For the other two, I alternate .. Monday's upstairs: Hoover, dust bathroom,
Tuesday's downstairs: Hoover, dust, kitchen, toilet .. Etc .. but I do no cleaning on Sunday's
Laundry every day, sheets and towels on alternate upstairs days, but every week.
I do sweep downstairs every day regardless though as we have a hairy dog.
Anyone who is in the kitchen does dishwasher, empties bin as and when needed ( most of the time !! )

I work on Thursdays and Fridays so only have 3 days a week but here's what I do:

Monday's and Wednesday's I clean the whole house. 4 beds, 3 baths, 14 rooms in all. Sounds daunting but literally each room takes 5-10 mins as they're never that dirty or messy, but here's the key. Each of those days I pick one room to clean thoroughly, so I'll clean the windows, skirting, lights, tidy drawers, etc. every other room as I've said I'll go in and quickly tidy and run a cloth round, even the bathrooms take minutes as they're never bad and means every few weeks or so each room gets blitzed and any clutter gets thrown.

Tuesday's I'll iron and do any extra jobs and any paperwork - doesn't take long. Also do the beds.

Weekends I just tidy around again and make it presentable for us to relax in.

Do washing every other day but iron on Tuesday's and Sunday's if necessary.

I do Hoover every day as I have a dog though!

Hi TENDTO
I'm a SAHM at the moment too and as much as it sounds mental I love cleaning! Though our home is somewhat smaller than yours, 3 bedroom flat which houses me, DP and DSx2 (7 years and 9 months).

I have a daily routine:
Put baby DS for a nap at 10am - he will sleep until 11:45am
Once he is sleeping I will do the following:

Have a quick tidy of big DSs bedroom, make bed, throw laundry into hall, pick up stray lego then hoover (it's the only room with carpet). Takes about 5-10mins.

Next is the bathroom, Bleach toilet, sink and bath and let soak, bring out old towels and swap for fresh ones, sweep into hall.

Then the living room, tidy mini DSs toys, wipe down table and mantle, wipe down sofa, and sweep into hall.

Kitchen, unload dishwasher, reload dishwasher, bin anything lying around. Spray sides with Dettol, put washing machine on, wipe sides and hob.

Back to bathroom, flush toilet, rinse sink and bath, crack a window.

Quick Sweep of hall and make sure shoe cupboard is neat.

Once mini DS wakes I tidy and sweep our room (he still shares with us) then heat his lunch while I mop the house.

After lunch I empty the washing machine and hang the washing.

On Saturdays I sweep and mop the 3rd bedroom as it's just an empty room at present. Then I clean the oven and kitchen cupboards (I shop on Sundays so it's more so see what's there, than they need cleaning every week). Sundays I wash bedding curtains and windows and Hoover the mattresses.

Once a month all doors, tiles and skirting boards get a good scrub. Pillows and duvets also get done once a month, as do soft toys.

I find it much easier if you don't have a lot of clutter (or a nice big storage place to hide it all like me).

BonesyBones · 25/04/2015 14:53

Oh, and I don't do piles of ironing, just put it away and iron when needed.

SantanaBinLorry · 25/04/2015 14:56

not sure how clear these well be... Sahm with 7 & 4 year olds. every one helps and gets a coloured tab for each job. Xtra's column on chart is rotating extras for house job eg, microwave, windows, edges and ledges. I have another chart for theses. Friday is pit away day. Laundry is dryed and folded all week. then all of it put away on Friday. Kids do their own wash and put away. Works for us :)

Can you tell me your cleaning routines please!

ah, not clear At All,

quite a big house, so one room at a time

mon- kitchen family room, deep clean, strip throws of couch, wash.
Tues - floors, stairs and halls, dust sweep mop (fully tiled, joy!)
weds - bathrooms
Thurs - bedrooms
Friday - put away day, once over for weekend.

we do a bit each day so there is hardly ever a build up :) kitchen wiped over and clear of dishes before bed etc. chuck brush around if needed. iron about twice a year :)

I clean everything in one go on a Saturday when DH is home and then just keep on top of it during the week. We also have a large home 3 storey town house that's got 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.

I also find doing a 5 minute tidy a few times a day helps, just grab stuff and put it where it should be, I do one before tea then when DD1 goes bed then again before we go bed.

I also have 2 children DD1 aged 5 Dd2 10 weeks. I'm currently on maternity leave at the minute
