Does anyone know how to remove black marks from a doll's face?

DD has a Monster High type doll that she loves. She developed black marks on her face - we don't know what caused it. Maybe rubbing against something while being carried in her bag.

She is driving me nuts about it. I have tried washing up liquid, a magic sponge and many other things and it has faded but still looks slightly grey.

Has anyone got any tips?

I've successfully removed black marks with hairspray before. It's basically rubbing alcohol in a can (who knew?!). You need to spray on the mark and blot with a cloth or kitchen paper - don't rub as it will spread the stain.
