Silly question about buying a headboard

Just ordered a divan bed - never had one before, now looking at headboards to go with it. We have limited headroom due to sloping ceilings - so I need to be careful about the height of the headboard. Where would your headboard normally sit - does it start from the top of the base or the top of the mattress? And if it has struts (rather than wall fixings), does it matter how long they are? Are divans all the same standard height? Arrgh!! Can anyone help?

Divans are pretty much a standard height, mattresses can differ by a couple of inches (generally the better quality the thicker they are).

The headboard starts in line with the top of the mattress (which obviously sits on the base) - it's possible to put it lower so you don't have to worry about your pillows disappearing down the minuscule gap between the mattress and the headboard.

Struts can be shortened (you just take a saw to the bottom) but you need at least three to four inches below where it attaches to the bed to balance the weight at the top (and so it doesn't fall in the night and try to suffocate you)

Thanks! Just what I needed. Scary thought being attacked in the night by a headboard!
