Cleaning the loo - Talk me through how you do it

Serious question. How do you clean your loo? I just squirt bleach round the rim then clean outside from top to bottom then a scrub inside with the brush and flush. But yesterday at our playgroup at the end of the day we came to clean up and i said i'd help this other Mum clean the toilets (nice of me i thought!). Anyway i watched her in amazement as she went inside hands on (with gloves on thankfully) and proper hands on clean inside down the u bend and under the rim. She did the outside first then bleached the inside before doing the hands on inside clean. Oh and she then flushed and left more bleach down there. Very thorough clean i thought. Just wondering how everyone else cleans the loo now?

I do the hands in malarkey when I deep clean the bathroom but it usually just gets a bleach and a scrub with a brush.

This is MN, just you owning a loo brush will drive some people to despair.Wink

DontWorryBaby · 21/03/2015 09:45

Yip, gloves on and hands in. It's my least favourite chore.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/03/2015 09:46

I do hands in malarkey. My u bend is too small to get a brush into properly.

pippahooper · 21/03/2015 09:59

Wow Shock I don't even clean the toilet with gloves on. I just wipe over the outside with loo roll which is then flushed.

I squirt toilet cleaner down (never use bleach) give it a scrub with a toilet brush. Wipe round the rest of it with antibacterial wipes which get binned. Don't wear gloves either.

Missqwerty · 21/03/2015 10:09

I clean all the outside and the seat with a wipe it toilet roll and spray. Inside I bleach with a toilet brush.

I also use a clip on bleach block which keeps it really clean.

Tbh it never gets dirty as I do this every few days.

WingsClipped · 21/03/2015 19:49

Similar to you. Squish the brush in to try and get as much of the water into the ubend as poss. Then squirt in toilet cleaner under the rim so it can work it's way down. Then antibac (dettol) spray the seat, outside, flush handle, around the floor etc and wipe it all down with kitchen roll while waiting for toilet cleaner to work it's magic.
Once all surfaces have been wiped down, I use the toilet brush to scrub inside and then flush.
With the hands in method, what do you actually use to clean the toilet with? I don't get how you can clean it with a scrubbing brush thingy of some sort?! Or do you use a scourer thing which then gets binned each time?!

WingsClipped · 21/03/2015 19:51

That's meant to read *without a scrubbing brush

mousmous · 21/03/2015 19:53

toilet cleaner down and under the rim.
wash outside, seat, floor with warm soapy water.
the scrub inside of toilet with toilet brush and flush. wipe off any droplets.

tilder · 21/03/2015 19:59

I have heard that there is a MN aversion to toilet brushes before. Just couldn't work out how to clean the loo properly without one. Never thought about gloves on and hands in. Not for me.

Antibacterial squirt everywhere but the bowl. Bleach and brush in the bowl. Job done.

Vivacia · 22/03/2015 10:13

Every morning the same routine. Clean outside with a cloth and vinegar spray, including behind and around the pipe. Seat comes off and is cleaned with a flushable wipe, inside cleaned with the same wipe and binned or flushed. Squirt of bleach.

NoisyOyster · 22/03/2015 11:09

vivacia you take the seat off EVERY day to clean it??!

Jeez, I thought I was doing well to unscrew it once a year....

exWifebeginsat40 · 22/03/2015 11:20

hands in, no gloves here. it's just water. obviously clean my hands with antibac afterwards but i don't get why people are so squeamish....

Vivacia · 22/03/2015 12:18

It clicks on and off Noisy.

LL12 · 22/03/2015 17:47

Is it correct that some people put their toilet seat in the dishwasher to clean?

imtheonlyone · 22/03/2015 17:55

Most days mine gets sprayed with flash with bleach, wiped all over with blitz kitchen roll and then bleach inside. When I'm doing a deep clean once every couple of months I get the steam cleaner on it. You'd be amazed what comes out of the joints - esp with two small boys ConfusedConfused

mayfridaycomequickly · 22/03/2015 18:04

I've never put my hand down the toilet - never!

Bleach and spray inside then scrub with the brush (I've got a nice brush pot but the actual brush is a cheap one from asda which I bin regularly) and leave whilst I clean the sink and bath. Quick wipe outside with wet wipe things and flush.

If I'm the last to use the loo before bed I squirt some cleaning spray into the bowl and leave it over night too

My toilet gleams compared to some of my friends' and I'm no cleaning godess!

mayfridaycomequickly · 22/03/2015 18:06

Vivacia - every morning?? I barely use the loobon a morning before I leg it out of the door let alone clean it!

Vivacia · 22/03/2015 18:24

The whole bathroom gets done (five people getting ready for work or school). DP and me get it done between us.

Discounted · 22/03/2015 18:42

I squirt bleach round, wipe the seat with loo roll and antibac then just leave it for a while every morning.

Once a week, it gets a proper wipe round all the outside but it never gets scrubbed (loo brush or not) on the inside and it never looks like it needs it.

Flingingmelon · 22/03/2015 18:45

Same as discounted. We've not caught anything yet...

Stealthpolarbear · 22/03/2015 18:50

sorry people actually stick their hands right down and into the bit you can't see at the back of the bowl?? really? I always assumed that bit was self cleaning and if not, I wouldn't want to touch whatever lurked in there

BasinHaircut · 22/03/2015 18:51

I'd only get my hands in of I thought it needed it, but I dont as a rule. I certainly wouldn't be putting my hands down a loo that wasn't mine for a 'tidy up after playgroup' clean!

Same as you, toilet cleaner in, clean outside of loo, use brush to clean bowl and rim, flush.

Vivacia · 22/03/2015 18:52

I do that Steal mainly because we live in a very hard water area. I believe that doing so stops the limescale forming and creeping along the bottom. It looks like crusty poo and can't be as hygienic as smooth porcelain.

Varya · 22/03/2015 18:59

Clean seat and lid with baby wipes and put them in the bin. Scrub the bowl with a brush, then pour thick bleach all around the bowl. Whisk the bleach with the brush, brush bleach under the rim, leave bleach in overnight, sparkling in the morning and no lime-scale line. Clean outside of wc where men trickle down, with a another baby wipe and put wipe in bin.
