DIY stain guarding on upholstery

Just taken possession of MultiYork replacement sofa/sofa cushions coverings (one linen, one cotton). I didn't opt for stainguard treatment because of the significant extra cost (over £200 for both sofas). Now, I'm wondering if I should have -

I've been looking for a non toxic stain guard that I could apply to the furnishings myself - or is this another false economy?

I've also looked to see if local dry cleaners offer such a service. So far, can't.

Any suggestions re a DIY stain guard that's not as laden with nasties as something like Scotchguard?

Older children and a cat at home - so spillages a little less likely but the cat does scratch soft furnishings which is why I wonder why I didn't get a warranty which would have come with the stain guard (I'm normally a bit way of warranties and I was/am on a tight budget). Thanks!
