got 4 kids bedrooms to furnish and want to get stuff that will be the most space effective and also easy to put away (all small rooms)
2 girls (who i would like to be able to reach everything now they can dress themselves. and would be good if they can put things away themselves too.

2 boys - both under 3 so i will be doing everything for now.

im thinking the boys can just have a big chest of drawers each? and the girls probably need a wardrobe for their dresses and a chest of drawers for their other things?

I would seriously go for adult wardrobes rather than 'kid' ones. They will need upgrading when kids get bigger so why pay twice? Agree with a PP re Ikea Pax wardrobes (wall to ceiling). Fabulous storage! You can use them to put toys etc (or seasonal clothes in storage) if they look a bit empty at the moment. We also have Ikea Malm 4-drawer chest of drawers. Lots of room in there too.

Best thing about Ikea is 1) reasonably priced 2) you can mix and match and customise it as you want.

So I have two large drawers under the hanging space in the wardrobe plus a wire basket drawer. And two shelves above the hanging space. DH said (once he had assembled them) - "I don't want to hear any complaints about lack of storage ever again"
