There's a funny smell

In my dining room.

Info: we have wooden floorboards, some large-ish joins which I know food has slipped through (DS throws a lot of food around and no amount of plastic sheeting has saved the floor).
The floors are swept daily,
mopped weekly.

Over the last few days I have noticed a sweet, pungent smell that is getting stronger. The only way I can describe it is a bit yeasty, not particularly unpleasant, but definitely not normal.

Any ideas what this is/how to deal with it?

I hate to say this, but a friend of mine had a similar problem and it turned out to be a mouse that had died under the floor. :( On the upside, a professional pest controller was able to pinpoint and remove said mouse with minimum fuss.

I was scared someone would say this. It's an old old house so wouldn't be surprised to think there's a mouse or two lurking. Grim.

Sorry! :( But I guess it's the peril of living in a beautiful old house (it sounds lovely, by the way).

If it is a mouse I'm afraid it may become quite unbearable and you will need to get it out of there - otherwise it can honk for weeks. I think pest control may have sprays etc. that will neutralise the odour. You need something like Febreze with knobs on!!

We have this in the spare room and I'm pretending it doesn't exist. At some point I know I'll have to face up to it and excavate the large cupboards of crap, but it's bearable and not getting worse...

This is really embarrassing - smell turned out to be some new pillar candles I'd got from ikea last week. They were supposedly unscented, but MIL just traced dead mouse smell back to them!! ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused
