Washing pillows

How often do you wash your bed pillows?
Duvet goes to the cleaners in late spring as its to big for us to wash then goes in storage till late autumn.

I always forget about the pillows ive just purchased new ones and id like to keep them looking and smelling nice.

They tend to go lumpy when washed so ours don't get done. I use pillow protectors though

Ours go horrible and lumpy too when washed so we replace them once a year.

I found they went lumpy too until I washed one on the wool cycle and found it came out just right. Since then I've washed quite a few on the wool cycle, max 2 pillows at a time.

Dd threw up on hers, so obviously I boil washed it to oblivion - but it went very lumpy!

The kids have cheaper ones which are replaced as needed (see above, but about once a year)

With adult ones,they get protectors on them and are aired whenever the bedcovers are washed, mine is memory foam which can get a bit wiffy - so I sprinkle them with bicarbonate of soda and tie them up in a bag which helps.

Down pillows wash well on 40 wash and long tumble dry.

we have hollow fibre pillows. the are washed every couple of months and come out well (mine is over 10 years old).
duvets are washed after hayfever season. dc have hollow fibre duvets that get washed when needed.

If you wash them, use ten nice balls in the dryer and they are less likely to be lumpy. I was just thinking about doing my sofa cushions.

I do the same as Lilymaid and wash mine a couple of times a year on a 40 wash, long tumble dry with drier balls in the drier. Look like new when they are dry. Pre starting to wash them I used to buy new ones every couple of years but haven't felt the need to since.

So tennis balls or dryer balls for the tumble dryer then twice a year or change of season to wash them?

Our local independent dry cleaner does wash loads in a big machine so I take ours when I take the duvet. I think they charge £6.50 per pillow (3' wide) They come up like brand new. We do use them with zip up pillow protectors, which are laundered with the pillowcases and they seem to stay fresh enough.

Dumb question alert!!! Can I wash feather pillows in the washing machines??! Mine are getting a bit wiffy so would like to freshen them but have never washed feather pillows in the machine!!

Yes you can wash feather and or down pillows successfully but you need a tumble drier to dry them successfully.

yes you can.
but you need to use wool detergent or schampoo as other detergents are too harsh.
if you don't have a dryer wait for a sunny, windy day and dry it outside. shake every now and then to fluff up the feathers.
