Recommendation for a vacuum cleaner please - MUST be an upright!

I need a new vacuum cleaner, but it must be an upright, as whenever I use cylinder ones they make my back ache.

It will be just me and ds (14) living in the house, no pets. The floors are all hard floors (wood, laminate or tiles) but there will also be rugs.

What would people recommend please?

I bought a Miele Dynamic U1 Power, 1500 watts at the start of December after much recommendation from others, but I absolutely hated it. The hose was too short to do the stairs (even from the top and from the bottom of the flight, I couldn't do the middle without crazy balancing), it had little suck, the tools fell off while hoovering, it was bulky to manouvre and just had too many buttons and settings. It was a lot to pay for a not-excellent hoover, so I returned it and bought a Dyson (Dyson DC25 Multi Floor Lightweight Dyson Ball Upright Vacuum Cleaner for Every Floor Type). So far I really like it. The hose is long enough that I can do a flight of stairs in one go. It is v steerable and sucky, there is an easy button to press when I move from carpet to hard floor. Big rugs are ok, but small things like door mats and a small-ish mat I have by the oven stick to the hoover so I pick them up first (they go in the washing machine). The filters are all washable and the cannister is easy to deal with and clean. I like to have bagless hoovers so I can suck up Lego/Hama spills and return to the box. The Miele had bags, which I didn't realise until it arrived (I had forgotton they existed to be honest). Before the Miele I had 3 Bissells. The first one was fab (lift-on bagless type), but each time I replaced it they got pregressively worse (and lasted a shorter time).

And new years resolution to be more exciting has finally died.

Thanks, Quite, that's interesting. I have had a Dyson, which was very good when new, but now is fading fast (but is at least 10 years old now). I would prefer bagless tbh, as I'm used to that now with the Dyson.

We've just bought a dyson stick cordless vacuum and it's fab. It has 20 minutes of charge at a time and does laminate and carpets really well with a turbo option. We have a 3 bed 2 reception house. It has attachments for stairs and I can even get the dcs to use it for picking up crumbs under the table after dinner. It's bagless, light and can be stowed away behind a door. We don't have cats or dogs but it's good for picking up mine and dds long hair.

Sebo X4. It has been to the menders a couple of times (over the course of 6 or 7 years), but repairs are not expensive and it's a bloody good hoover. Much more solid than the Dyson I had before. I thought I'd find using bags again a pain, but I don't: the Sebo needs emptying much less often than the Dyson did so it's less annoying rather than more.

Another vote for the Sebo, they really last and much easier to empty with the large bags than a dyson

My Sebo is 6 years old now. No repairs. The bags last for 4-5 months as they're huge top fill bags and keep compacting all the dirt down as you use it. In the whole time I've owned it, I'm only onto my 2nd pack of bags. The filtration level is superb too - hospital standard S class. And the machine comes with 5 years guarantee on everything, even the belt is covered! It has automatic computer controlled height adjustment, so no faffing with settings or dials, it does all the working out for you so it doesn't damage your floors or cause excessive wear to the brushroll and belt. The filters need replacing annually, but these are not expensive and available to buy from John Lewis and from Sebo.co.uk.

I have a Sebo with the auto height selection and it has damaged my wood floor. I would therefore recommend something where you turn the brush on/ off yourself.
Shame as it is excellent on the carpets.
