We need a new bed. Thinking divan with drawers to store all my shoes Any recommendations on a decent mattress?

We bought bed and mattress direct from their factory showroom in Bucks. Cost about £1600. Worth every penny.

Hypnos make the Ortho range of mattresses, which are currently available as special purchases in John Lewis. They are cheaper than newgirl's mattress. They stock them year round too just not at the special prices.

I've just bought a Spink and Edgar mattress from JL, sold as the 'Natural Collection' as a limited time special buy. Very, very comfy and the stuffing/padding is all natural materials, made by a family firm in Yorkshire.

There are lots of deals around on beds at the moment.

Having recently researched mattresses, beware paying hundreds of pounds for latex and memory foam because the synthetic stuff is cheap to produce so there is a large mark up on it. It can also make it feel hot in bed as it isn't as breathable as pocket sprung mattresses with natural components.

Latex. Not memory foam. Natural latex with a fabric covering, smooth or quilted. OMG the best mattress ever. Not cheap at all, but wears awesomely well and is the most comfortable imaginable.

The latex has holes right through it, so you don't overheat like on a memory foam mattress. Without any springs it has minimal bounce, but the natural springiness means it is not soggy. You can rock and roll without disturbing your partner at all.

We got ours from John Lewis, and it is on a slatted base. It's our second latex mattress. We had to get a new one when we upgraded to a king size bed after 10y. The first mattress is now on its 3rd bed after 5y light use on a guest bed, and is as good as new (for comfort - it has a few stains).

Latex is inhospitable to dust mites, BTW.

We have a latex mattress and i love it.

Latex is a natural product, not man made like memory foam.

I haven't found the latex any hotter than any other mattress we have had. It is naturally anti-allergenic and anti-dust mite.

Latex is also very good for anyone who has a back problem (both dh and I have) as it supports the spine well, much like memory foam.

We have a pure latex matress - it doesn't have any springs. It was quite expensive but should have a lifespan of around 20 years.

As there is a big weight and height difference between me and DH I researched mattresses a lot when we needed a new bed.

We went to a bed factory where they make the mattress to your needs. That meant I could choose a divan base and the colour of the fabric or provide my own. I could choose the drawer configuration I wanted and we could get advice on the best mattress for us.

Me lying on a medium mattress would feel fine but it would feel like sleeping on a marshmellow for DH (used to play rugby, is 6'3" tall)

Therefore "medium firm" is a useless term for us. We talked to them about DH being too hot and me being just fine and they tailor made a mattress for us. The entire bed which is a 6ft zip and link divan (can't get a 6ft mattress up our stairs without folding it which would render it useless) so we have 2 x 3ft mattresses zipped together and a mattress topper cost £1100.

It is double sided so we can flip it making it have a longer life.

Contented - I also have a 6ft2 ex rugby player (and I am 5ft2 and half his weight) so your advice is very relevant. Can I ask - did you need the topper due to the zip lock? What kind of topper do you have?

We recently bought a Hypnos king mattress and divan. It was around £1,700.

I can't get over how well I sleep in this bed compared to what I've had over the last 10 years. You need to go try out beds in person though, don't buy online without trying. I did that for our spare room (a John Lewis ortho, also manufactured by Hypnos) and it's a horrible bed.

Definitely check mattresses out in person. Don't be embarrassed - take as long as you like, and then some. Roll around, sit up, lie still for ages. If you have to go alone, recruit a sales assistant to join you on the bed, so that you can feel the effect of another person moving around in the bed with you.

Also important is to make sure that the mattresses you are trying out are on the same type of bed base as you will have. The sales assistants will shift the mattresses around for you, but you may have to request it.

If there is a big discrepancy between you and your OH, then, again, it's really worth trying out a good latex mattress.
