Small iron casseroles

PigletJohn · 27/11/2014 22:11

I want some that will go on the hob or in the oven and will not crack (so not ceramic) and have lids. I might make individual fish or braised meat things rather than serve from a giant pot. Preferably black (I have le Creuset volcano orange stuff and am bored with it)

...so who knows where to look?

(is this the right place to ask, or is there a cooking pot forum?)

Worth a look in TK Maxx/Homesense. Also the kind of thing Aldi do from time to time. eBay. Debenhams.

Black Le Creuset?

SneakretSanta · 27/11/2014 23:07

Tesco are doing lovely ones at 70% off if you collect stamp thingies when you shop there (or buy petrol from tesco garages, which is how I collected them). Not black though - just got a little blue one for my sister's birthday, 29.99 instead of £99.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/11/2014 23:18

How small is small?

Sainsburys have a nice range- I have a few of their cast iron pots and they are as good as my Le Creuset. Plus they seem to cycle through the colours at an alarming rate, and heavily reduce the 'old ' colours. Eg I have a flat buffet casserole for £9, a 28cm (i think) casserole for £11. They've got some mini ones, the smallest cast irons that I've seen in normal shops I think they have them in a few colours

Dancingincircles · 27/11/2014 23:45

I have a white shallow le creuset casserole dish which I use for everything such as my roast chicken tonight, my bolognaise sauce the other day. Nothing beats it in my opinion and it makes the best casseroles, a million times better than my slow cooker. Plus it looks good enough to take to the table to serve.

But I'm sure any similar design will do the job. Iron covered in enamel. I have a ceramic hob and it works fine on that. Mine looks like the link below but is much older and was a hand me down.

Oops that link didn't quite work sorry

PigletJohn · 27/11/2014 23:49

I'm thinking about 150mm wide, but £99 each le C is too expensive.

Sainsbury's look good value but the mini-oval is too big. I might want to serve, say, an individual shepherds pie or boeuf Bourguignon, so it should be one (generous) serving.

I have not seen them in Tesco recently, are they definitely iron?

I don't think there's a TK Maxx/Homesense round here (small town)

I wonder if the Sainsbos dimensions are wrong. This old link has a toyally different size. Certai ly i dont remember them being as big as 22cm... www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop/home_and_garden/125111450_cooks-collection-red-cast-iron-oval-mini-casserole-2-pack.html

Is this too small ? Good price if not but I have not had one myself so can't comment on quality

PigletJohn · 28/11/2014 14:26

'mmm, thanks, looks nice, but I think 100mm is too small.

Same thing but just to show that price is for 6 I think not one

PigletJohn · 28/11/2014 17:23

Thanks for all the tips.

I cruised round a Sainsbos on the way home (there isn't one in my small town) and they had the small oval ones. The dish is 150mm wide, including handles it is 190.

They had orange and cream, none in black unfortunately, but some dried-blood red ones, so I got four of them (they were at reduced price, so probably discontinued).

I buy professional cookware from a catering supplier called Nisbets.

They have a 3.2 litre black iron casserole dish here that will last a lifetime for £24.99 + VAT.

They also have bigger 5 litre ones.

PigletJohn · 28/11/2014 18:40

I have an account at Nisbets, but sadly they don't seem to have tiny ones.

Glad you found what you were looking for Piglet John. Unfortunately having browsed I have become convinced my life cannot become complete without a set of mini casserole dishes. And I'm not supposed to be spending money . That'll teach me to interfere .
