I don't know which nametags to use, sew-on or iron-on??

I just wanted to know if the iron-on name tags are any good and if they actually stay on the garments through numerous washes and day-to-day wear. They are for my three year old's clothes and I really can't face sewing nametags on everything (I had to do this on my clothes at boarding school so have an aversion to it now!). What are other people's opinions? What do others use? Is there a trick to sewing on the sew-on ones quickly?
Sorry if this has been done before by the way

I've used both. The iron on ones are really quick to do and are more convenient. They don't last as long, say a year's worth of washing and drying. You also have to be careful when ironing the clothes not to put the iron on the tag otherwise it will melt! the sew ons are more hassel but you only have to do it once.

Do you need name tags? - I use a laundry marker and that is ultra quick and hardly any hassle at all!

I used iron-on ones. I never get round to sewing or mending and so these were the easy option.

They're lasting pretty well so far (DS started school in Sept.!) but there were so many in the pack it won't matter if some of them do come off.

Also, if we manage to salvage any hand me downs for DD it will be easier to iron over with her tags than sew on new ones.

Ha! I started a thread about name tags back in August when I was faced with the prospect of sewing then in to 40 items of uniform! So I can empathise totally!!

I was advised (by a number of mums) to go for the sew in ones as they stay on. So I started sewing mine in. However, it didnt take long before my fingers became unbelievably sore and I wish I had bought the iron on ones! The sew in ones do look good, and will certainly last a long time - but I AM NEVER EVER SEWING NAME TAGS ON SOCKS AGAIN! So I'd advise to get iron on ones for that.

Sorry, that has probabl confused you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great, thanks for all the advice! This is why I love mumsnet!
Naswm no you haven't confused me, actually you have made up my mind, I will be getting the iron-on ones I think!

Iron-on have stayed on all of dd's clothes. If your child is the only one in the class with your surname, you can just put the surname on the tag. Then you don't have to redo it for younger siblings in hand-me-downs... Or am I just very lazy?

Just make sure you don't do it after a very sleep-deprived night, thats all. I had to put a label in dd's little bag for nursery, and I put the iron over the plastic zip and melted it.

I've found a biro & permanent marker pen to be best.

Hattiecat · 03/10/2006 11:01

def vote for the pen here too - i used iron to start with and they just annoyed dd as they went kind of hard...

Thanks fruitful, good advice! We do have an unusual surname, no one else has it apart from us in the country so surname alone should be fine!
Thanks for the pen tips too, it does seem like the easiest idea, I guess I am just a bit fussy though and think nametags look neater and nicer...probably just creating more work than is necessary

Nametags in socks???

kittywits · 03/10/2006 22:25

I do just the surname thing too. I have to spend a little time working out whose uniform stuff belongs to who though!
