How can I clean curtains?

I rent and the curtains are fairly cheap tab top unlined made from cotton or something I imagine. They're quite grubby but I don't really want to pay lots to get them professionally done. (Anyone have any idea how much that would be?).
Would some sort of steam type cleaner be any good? There's a mark/stain on one curtain that looks like it could be foundation or food. Maybe I'd be better off buying my own?!

Machine wash? Any washing instructions on a label?

what type of fabric? are there any care labels in them? May well be washable in the washing machine.

If they are washable and cheap, they are quite likely to shrink ime. I would wash them on a low temperature with some bioological washing powder to lift the muck out.

If the mark is possibly make up, put some neat washing up liquid on it before you put them in the wash.
