Do you put your candlesticks on a mat? Plate?

Sounds like an odd question but I had two wooden candle sticks and both got wax all over the mantle when I used them last. I have lots of candles in jars as well, but for longer tapered candles I was hoping for some advice (thinking Halloween and Christmas)!

I have a couple of mirrored star shaped coasters, sold for the purpose.

Else wise plates, get called into service. My mantel is only a cheap veneered shelf, not up to having wax chipped off it.

My tapper candles I stuck in a square valse of those glass 1/2 marble things, because they came with very unsafe tiny cube holders.
