How do you manually (by hand) wash carpets?

Buy some carpet shampoo and there should be instructions on the bottle about hand-washing. I once did this with some Vanish stuff, using a sponge. You whip it up into a foamy lather, spread the foam over the carpet with a damp sponge, leave to dry, then run the hoover over.
