How can I clean elasticated panels on leather boots?

I'm very excited to have picked up a bargain pair of knee high leather boots at charity shop, but whilst polishing them on return home have detected a damp / mildewy smell on the elasticated panel at the back (calf) panel.

It's quite faint and there's no sign of mildew but I have a very sensitive nose and would like to clean the elasticated bit if possible without damaging the leather front part.

Any tips would be gratefully received.

TIA
