Where do you all keep bags?

We have a narrow hall and it is permanently cluttered up with bags. DD has a bookbag, a swim bag, a dance kit bag and goodness knows how many other bags, which all get dumped where they land.

DS has a massive backpack he sticks behind the door.

I've got current handbag and spare.

The understairs cupboard has a door only 3ft high so we can't hang things in there. We have coat hooks by the door but they are permanently full. We also have a meter cupboard either side of the front door so nowhere to put any more hooks etc.

Given that nobody will put their shoes in the shoe cupboard I don't think there is any chance of them taking bags upstairs, so wise people - where can I put the bags?

I know IKEA don't sell them anymore, but something like an Expedit?

YoungBritishPissArtist · 04/10/2014 17:03

Something like this placed on its side?

VelvetEmbers · 04/10/2014 17:56

No room for that, sadly.

If people won't take them beyond the hall, then the only answer is to find somewhere in the hall. More hooks, maybe?

But surely the swim bag and dance kit bag are only weekly things? How about a reward / punishment regime for taking those upstairs and putting away in designated place? e.g. left in hall over night on any 3 separate occasions and DD has to wash the dishes. Take them upstairs 3 times in a row, without being reminded, and its get to stay up half an hour late.

A storage basket on the floor in your cupboard?

PennyJennyPie · 05/10/2014 16:32

We had units from smartstorage.ie installed. V happy, they look great. Not sure if you have enough space under the stairs though? They install in the UK.

Don't suppose you could post a picture of your hall so we could have a look and make suggestions?

Are all of the coats necessary? Can you think them out / put summer jackets away?

Put your spare handbag upstairs in your wardrobe.

Perhaps compromise and the dance / swimming bags are left on the stairs - first person to go up the stairs takes them up. Don't do this if people are likely to leave them though - wouldn't want you breaking your neck on my account!

Is there anything on the back of the understairs door ? I would put a few hooks on here if possible

scrimper · 07/10/2014 15:01

ikea don't do expedit anymore? ?? Shock oh no! we bought one a couple of months ago and was going to get more boxes etc for it soon and more units once we have our building work done. Sad

I struggle too with bags. we currently have them on coat hooks on the wall which at least gets them off the floor. But the hall is narrow so they are still in the way.

we do however have an ikea chest of drawers and we have one drawer each. the kids have their shoes in their and the idea was also to keep book bags in there but they have too many shoes!

Ikea have replaced Expedit with Kallax - I bought one last week.

VelvetEmbers · 07/10/2014 19:30

The understairs cupboard has louvre doors... see what I'm up against? Thanks for all the suggestions.

You could still put hooks up on the doors, you'd just need to attach a piece of wood first to attach them to. Or get over the door hooks.

We have the world's tiniest hallway.

Shoes: no one used the drawers here, so I had a small bespoke set of shoe cubbies made for our hallway. Nothing to open and close, just open cubbies. Shoes are now generally put away.

Bags: mine on a coathook, DC's school bags in the living room (not ideal) and everything else gets put away in bedrooms. Gym, swimming and dance bags are only used once a week so IMO they don't 'earn' space in our tiny hall. In reality they sit on the hall floor or the stairs until I nag someone.
