Is there anything I could use as an alternative?

Can you put zoflora in with your washing?

You can use white vinegar for softening, but if you want the smell then a couple of drops of essential oils?

Yes, you can. Especially good for sports kits/trainers, pet bedding.
Makes washing smell lovely and would kill bacteria in the washing machine as well.

yes, put 1 or 2 capfuls of zoflora in the fabric softener dispenser bit. I use it for smelly gym/sports kit

I once heard that hair conditioner started life as fabric conditioner so perhaps it would work?
