The more I shampoo my carpet the more it smells

Dd left a sopping wet bag of swimming stuff in the hall and the carpet now smells fusty.

I shampooed it with my Bissel yesterday with cleaning stuff in he tank. Made no difference. Did it again this morning and its 10x worse.

I've chucked bicarbonate of soda down and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. The whole house now smells of fusty carpet.

What next? I have a steam cleaner, would that be better than the carpet shampooer as it won't be as wet? Or buy some febreeze and try and mask the smell?

It probably just needs to be left to dry thoroughly. Damp carpet, especially if it has wool in it, will smell even when it's clean.

I agree. It will smell until it's completely dry.

The wet swimming incident was a week ago and it still smelt yesterday but seemed perfectly dry.

Yep, they really honk until they're properly dry and then the smell just magically disappears.

Open the windows and pray for dry weather!

Ok, will get the dehumidifier in there full blast. Thanks.
