Iron v. nylon

It looks like our iron has lost a battle with some artificial fabric. Brown stuff stuck ike rock to it. Any top tips for getting it off? Plastic scourer not worked. Will try steel if i can buy some today. Any help gladly received!

My mum used to use something that looked like a Pritt stick that you rubbed all over the plate - I think it then dissolved the stuck-on stuff.

However, I've no idea if such a thing still exists so not much use - sorry!
