Futons, mattresses and other scintillating issues

Our (very) old futon, which is on a raised wooden base, is in desperate need of burning replacement.

There is nothing wrong with the base, it's attractive and sturdy and we have a matching underbed storage thing for it. Hence, new futon. But the only place in London that has them to try out AFAIK is Futon Company which charges £££££ if you want something for everyday. There are cheaper places on the Internet, but I don't want to spend hundreds on something I haven't tried out at all.

Is there anywhere else? Should we just bite the bullet and look for the most plausible of the ten indistinguishable websites all called something like buyyourfutonfromus.com? Or should we just slap a normal double mattress on top of our existing base? I think it's a standard double size, and that would mean we had enormous choice of places to go and bounce up and down in a childish manner.

Dull, I know, sorry, but v important. I'm sure the current futon(s) (yes, OK I admit it, they're so old and knackered that we're sleeping on two piled on top of each other like the Princess and the Pea) are harbouring all sorts of biology.
