Flour storage ... Surely this must be possible!!

Just got new clean kitchen cupboards and am looking for air tight boxes that will store a full bag of flour. There seem to be loads of 'dry food containers' like Systema, Lock and Lock etc., but they all want you to decant the flour. I just want to lob the full bag straight in. Surely this must be possible!!?? Has anyone got such a thing? TIA Thanks

I use this one from Lakeland. It fits a bag of flour but you do need to push it down quite firmly.

Sorry, I keep flour in the freezer here.

atticusclaw · 15/09/2014 08:54

I tie it in a carrier bag until its needed and then decant. Is there a reason why you don't want to decant it?

WingsClipped · 15/09/2014 09:59

I use the big one for cereal storage and the small one fits a bag of flour 1.5kg perfectly without decanting. I just roll the top of the flour packet down after using and pop the lid back on.

Sorry, don't know how to do clicky links.

WingsClipped · 15/09/2014 10:00

Oh the link worked!

I keep flour in the bag inside in a Zip Lock bag.

murphys · 15/09/2014 15:10

I also use a big zip lock bag.

Thumbwitch · 15/09/2014 15:13

I keep mine in the freezer but as it's a 10kg sack, I have a large glass jar with a very fitted lid to decant it into for general use. You can use it straight from the freezer but I prefer not to. I think my large glass jar was billed as a pasta jar, can't remember now!

Thumbwitch · 15/09/2014 15:15

Actually (and amazingly!) I've just found it, and no, it was just a "large kitchen storage jar. But might not be available in the UK, although I'm sure you could find similar. You can get a 1kg bag straight in there without having to decant though :)

Loula117 · 15/09/2014 15:52

I use the large glass kilner jars, you can fit a whole bag in one of those and it's airtight.

297 · 15/09/2014 22:05

Excellent! Thank you all so much ... Off to order some Lakeland ones right now. No good reason for not decanting - just pure laziness I'm afraid Grin

I just fold the lid down & put a peg on. Or sometimes buy the rigid boxes.

Icelollycraving · 17/09/2014 23:17

I use a Kilner & decant from big bag in the freezer.

I have some standard kitchen storage plastic jars that work. they are large ones and not cheap. I bought ones that looked big enough and when I found a style that did work I bought more of them. so I have a couple of too small ones that work fine for a bag of sugar.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 18/09/2014 21:44

The freezer? Why on earth?

bohoec · 18/09/2014 21:46

Tell me about freezing flour. Why? To extend the life, or is it a storage thing? I've never heard of that before. Thanks.

bohoec · 18/09/2014 21:47

x-post, sorry

Icelollycraving · 18/09/2014 22:15

I freeze flour so it stays fresh until I need it but more importantly to kill any weevil larvae that's in it.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 18/09/2014 22:19

Can you use it straight out of the freezer?

Icelollycraving · 19/09/2014 05:44

I don't.

joanofarchitrave · 19/09/2014 06:04

Blimey. The only time I've had flour weevils is in the past when I didn't bake very often so didn't use the flour for a long time, like a year. These days it goes in a couple of weeks so weevils aren't an issue.

FoxtrotOscarBackToEconomy · 19/09/2014 08:41

I opened a brand new bag of recently bought bread flour this week and it had weevils crawling in it. Angry

Fortunately I had a spare bag so I could still make my bread. At least the weevil infested unopened bag had been stored in a tin so at least they hadn't spread...

Artandco · 19/09/2014 08:48

I decant into Kilmer jars here. The jars are labelled so have plain, self raising, wholemeal, and bread

skinnysoyvanillalatte · 19/09/2014 09:13

I live in Australia and freeze to prevent weevils.

Thumbwitch · 19/09/2014 09:31

Yes, freezing is to stop the flour weevils.
It can be used straight from the freezer, because it doesn't actually freeze solid, but it's probably better to let it warm up a little bit beforehand, as it can clump up a bit. I wrap my paper sack in plastic bags to stop the flour getting damp in the freezer.
