Steam mop or carpet cleaner?

Hello all
Just looking for a bit of advice. Have been slightly seduced by the idea is a steam mop but am wondering, apart from cleaning floors... What do they actually do?
We have carpet in the part of the kitchen that has the table and chairs- tbh the carpet should be condemned, it's filthy after 2 children chucking food on it for years. We will change it eventually but it's a few years off til we do up kitchen etc, don't want to buy more carpet now as we will hopefully tile or have wood instead. Anyway..... Would a steam mop clean my carpet? Would a carpet cleaner clean my tiled and stone floors? What do I need? Help me please!!

I have 3 large dogs and bought a steam cleaner a few months ago when doing my carpets I don't think they really rid all the muck but to kill odours, mine is an X5 steam mop I've bought extra pads as it does show the dirt coming off your carpet but I don't think it really cleans them. I bought a new rug for the living room and I keep going over it a couple of times a week to keep the dog smell down. My advice is to invest in a carpet cleaner, steam cleaners are fab for doing your kitchen, bathroom etc
