Decided to move furniture around today and I found a hole that measured about 1cm - 2cm wide with a fresh pile of sawdust, on my wooden storage box.

Any ideas!!!

Never come across one that wide, I'm sure you would have seen or heard any creatures that big (sorry didn't mean to scare you ).
Have you asked your DP if he knows anything? Or kids if they are old enough to be that creative?

I know about wood boring bees in America, but no idea about here. Also, don't think bees would be be so low down. Are there termites here in the UK, and could this be their work? Know they typically come under a house...

No idea really, just offering some guesses....

could it be a mouse??
we had a hole that size in one of our floorboards and one day there were mouse droppings nearby, so we assume it was a mouse...

i have to say, the though of a mouse is no were near as scary as the thought of an insect that can make a 2cm hole!!!
