Carpet cleaning...

We've always got some one in to do this in our house. Wondering if I can hire a machine and do this myself as it's only a cheap carpet. What are the risks? Is it a false economy?

There was a great thread on here a while ago about cleaning carpets and one of the contributors was Tony the Carpet Cleaner (I think). If you read his post, you'll think 'false economy' to do it yourself, but I guess it depends on your budget.
