It's sometimes called malt vinegar (or distilled malt vinegar, or acetic acid), but it isn't brown. Generally available in all the big supermarkets. You can use ordinary malt vinegar in the same way but then you have to wash whatever it was again to get rid of the brown colour.

I don't know whether white wine vinegar is as acidic, but it's certainly more expensive!

My local ethical fair trade shop sells it and does refills - Who Cares in Melksham. If you are not near here try health food shops maybe.

TenaLady · 17/09/2006 15:42

Yep Tesco do it distilled malt vinegar

cherylandchloe · 17/09/2006 15:43

its all got round about the same ph, surely, so I reckon you can use any sort of vinegar you want...

I suppose there might be a problem with bacteria in malt, having said that, but wouldn't the acid kill them off? confused.

Can anyone tell me how to iron a pair of velour trousers? I can't seem to make the pile as soft and even as when they were new!

JackieNo · 18/09/2006 11:06

Someone on another thread posted a link to this site that does white vinegar in bulk for cleaning (and other stuff too). Haven't tried it myself, but it looks good.

Branster · 18/09/2006 13:02

i've been using vinegar for a few years now, mainly to descale my kettle. have realised i was using the wrong type (white wine vinegar) whoich absolutely stinks! since anthea came on the scene, i've noticed she only syas white vinegar. anyway, after lots of googleing and references to my cleaning folder, it turns out white vinegar is better than distilled malt vinegar and has less of an odour.
so far, i've only seen it sold on the website from summernaturals. off to teh other thread on anthea's cleaner with an update on it .....

JackieNo · 18/09/2006 13:04

Ah - your magical cleaning folder, Branster. Was it you who posted the summernaturals link?

MadAnth · 18/09/2006 13:05

I have been using white vinegar by Heinz. Its an absolute god send.

Branster · 18/09/2006 13:09

oh yes, JackieNo! I might move the folder from the kitchen cupboard to the computer desk, just in case...
yes, it was me with the link. got my order today!!

JackieNo · 18/09/2006 13:14

I was well impressed with the tip for using cuticle remover to get hair dye off leather. And I like the summernaturals site too - will be putting in an order very soon.

Branster · 18/09/2006 14:22

to tell the truth, i too was impressed that it worked
see, a good reson to have a cleaning folder! you can start the first page with that website address for future reference

JackieNo · 18/09/2006 14:23

But I don't need to any more - I can just come on MN and ask you.

Branster · 18/09/2006 14:27

That's true! Mumesnet to the rescue any time

Furball · 18/09/2006 14:30

cescaclem - Your ost is abit lost on this thread, but have you tried ironing them inside out?
