how can I clean a varnished wooden coffee table?

We have a wooden 60s coffee table that has been varnished in the past. I tried to clean it and it went all tacky and now I can't get rid of the stickyness. Any ideas how to get rid of that and just get it polished smooth again?
Grateful for any advice.

water+ vinegar then a good quality polish.

If what you cleaned it with has affected the varnish, you may have to sand it back to bare wood and reseal it.

mixture of olive oil & vinegar for cleaning

to polish rub the surface with half a walnut. it takes loads of walnuts, lots of effort and takes forever!! it's the oil in the walnuts that feeds the wood and shines. best to stick with a normal furniture polish maybe...
