Kitchen bins in cupboards - do they make your cupboard smell?

My bin is driving me nuts! It's a floor bin and constantly in the way of opening units (narrow galley kitchen); it marks the wall too if it catches

Thinking of sacrificing a slim floor unit to do a built in bin and the recycling behind which currently stands on the counter til it's moved at the end of the night (it would be small so would likely be emptied nightly)

I've heard though that the cupboard eventually starts to smell due to odours eeking in to the cabinet frame/wood etc

Anyone give me a yay or nay for doing in built in?

I have a Brabantia one like this. When I was a smoker (I know, I know!) I used to empty my ashtrays in it and was always quite impressed that the faggy smell in the cupboard was minimal. Now I've seen the error of my ways and the only stinky things that go in that bin are empty sachets of cat food. With my newly-improved sense of smell I can report that there is definitely no seepage of odours into the cupboard. There's no special seal or anything on it, just a lid that comes down and sits in place.

The only tiny thing I'd criticise is that the similar bin I had prior to this one had a string attached to the lid which meant that when the cupboard door was opened the lid opened. This was quite nifty, but I do OK without it!

No, but I take the rubbish out to the dustbin every night.

It is one of the best things about my kitchen, having a bin hidden away.

no _ i like a bin that is hidden. Its not huge so you have to empty it daily, which is as it shoudl be

We have the bin that attached to the cupboard door, when it's closed it has a lid that goes over the bin. And to be fair unless a leave food in there for a week it doesn't smell. And I'm not falling over the bin any longer :)

I used a bin without lid under the sink. It doesn't smell but we take it out every night in summer.

Ours is a simple human one with no lids.

I did worry at first but then realised that the smelly stuff goes in the food waste caddy, not the actual bins. The food waste also lives under the sink, but has a lid on and gets milton'd regularly. The stuff in the general bin and recycling bin are all pretty much 'clean'. Tins are rinsed out before going into recycling anyway.

Our bin is just a bucket in the under sink cupboard. Glamorous! It gets cleaned more regularly than when we had a floor standing one and because it is so small it gets taken out every night. Cupboard smells nice because it also has the dishwasher tablets in there.
