We have maggots in our food bin dp managed to get rid of most of them but our collection is on Monday. Will the council take the bin?

We had maggots last year after dh thoughtfully put the guts of a fish he had caught in the wheelie bin! Couldn't get rid of them all but council emptied the bin then I paid a fiver to have it jet washed clean. Dh is under strict instructions not to repeat!

Usually the council van just tips the bin in automatically so they wouldn't know if you had maggots in the bin or not.

I'd just either get some bleach and give it a good soaking and scrub or pay a cleaning service to sort it.

I use a brilliant product called "Bin Buddy". It's in a carton shaped like a green wheelie bin, and is a fantastic fly repellent - repels the flies, kills any eggs and maggots. Bought it in the supermarket.

The council van does tip in the bin automatically, but often maggots can be left behind. Sprinkle them with this magic powder, hose out the bin afterwards, Bob's yer Uncle. :0)

We have a big sign up in our kitchen. It says:

SUMMER IS HERE! HOORAY!
THIS MEANS FLIES! BOO!

  • scrape and rinse plates immediately
  • keep all food covered at all times
  • keep the lid of the food caddy closed at all times
  • empty the food caddy before it won't shut
DON'T LET MAGGOTS BE YOUR FAULT!!!

So far so good this year. We had a nasty infestation last year though, just blasted them into the gutter with a hose. Birds love them, they weren't hanging around for long.

I sympathise, I am fine with insects and spiders and things like that but maggots make me feel really ill.
