Cleaning a rug without a vacuum cleaner

I have a rug which really really needs a good clean. Mostly it's dusty and has hair in it (disgusting I know, but my hair is long).
At first I used to borrow a vacuum cleaner from someone down the hall, but they've gone and I only have a little handheld thing, which really isn't powerful enough.

I've ignored the rug for much too long now. Any ideas to get it properly clean without spending a fortune/buying a proper vacuum?

Buy a big sticky lint roller and give it a good roll every few days.

Take it outside and beat it! Failing that a sock and weak detergent solution!

Hang it over the washing line & bate the shite out of it? (Therapeutic too)

It's too big to lift without rolling it up, so beating would be difficult (also don't have an outside).
I'll try the lint rooler thing.
Thanks!

you can also shake dust off mats over the bath, it is then easy to wipe or hose it away.
