Help please!

I am a long time leaker, I need some advice, not sure if this is the right place but will give it a go.

I have a wool / cashmere jumper that belonged to my dad who passed away in February. My Sep mum gave me the jumper. I was never going to wear it just reminded me of him.
I washed the jumper in the machine in a very low setting. It shrunk, but was not too bothered as it was just for memory. Dsm now wants jumper back!! She thinks she might like to wear it. Is there any magic tips for an attempt to get it back?

Sorry OP, no advice on how to 'unshrink' jumper, but it is a bit strange that your DSM wants it back?! I would tell her what happened and keep it as a momento of your DD (sorry for your loss).

Your DSM could be feeling very vulnerable and just wants to hang on to everything relating to your DD but you are entitled to a momento too especially when she gave it to you.

It is probably a blessing in disguise that the jumper shrank!

Turn into a cushion and tell her you've turned it into a cushion. I think it's quite mean for her to give it to you and then say she wants to back. If it is a nice colour or has a nice pattern it might be nice to turn it into something else. Maybe even mittens?

Good idea Betty. If I make it into a cushion. She still keep it close. I do feel I have to give it back, as sad as it is I feel she could be difficult if I don't.

Soaking in a sink full of diluted fabric conditioner could help relax the fibres and stretch it out a bit

I had similar problems with MIL handknitted jumper that was originally dh's and she wanted ds to wear.

Massive, thank you for that advice. I am going to give that a go! I have no energy to fight over a jumper. Dh thinks this situation it very funny as dsm is a large lady. I don't think it would of fit here even if I hadn't managed to shrink it!
