How do I clean the residue from masking tape off windows?

I've tried white spirit (which did the job at getting rid of the stickers left on the new woindows) and regular glass cleaner to no avail.
dh edged every pane with masking tape to paint them and then left them for over a month. I went to peel them off the other day and they've either left a residue or they just won't come off (where dh overlapped with the gloss paint).
Any suggestions?

Nail varnish remover might work - it's the acetone.

Actually, since DH overlapped with gloss paint - I'd get him to clean it off!

Soapy water and a nylon scourer.

White spirit, I think

Fimbo · 11/09/2006 14:09

Oops

Razor blade, and a lot of care?

cupcakes · 11/09/2006 14:13

right - am going to try nail varnish remover.
I can't wait another 2 months for dh to get round to doing it.

diy shop should sell scraper just for the purpose, with a stanley blade in it. cost about £3?

Rub vigorously with a soft pencil eraser to get rid of the residue, I'm not sure what to do about the gloss bit.

the nvr works very slightly. It is going to take forever (the thought of dh doing it is becoming more attractive...)

here

the paint bits would probably come off with a scraper but it's the marks left by the tape which aren't budging.
Am going to try a rubber

rubber not shifting it - it is hard as nails.
will look for window scraper.

if glass is normal smooth stuff the scraper will get the residue off no problem. useless if it is (oh can't remebmer what it is called) bobbly or patterned glass.

masking tape is a pain if left on anything. whip it off as soon as you've painted! white spirit is usually quite good. have you tried wd40

cupcakes · 11/09/2006 14:21

it is smooth glass - and brand new...

will see if we have any wd40 - I thought that was an oil?

Cupcakes - found this .

tamsino · 11/09/2006 15:08

definitely wd40. spray, leave on as long as you can and will dissolve the glue. i managed to get the sticky glue from masking tape off my car when it had held my l plates on for 9 months :-)

cupcakes · 11/09/2006 17:02

Fimbo - thank you! Will look for it.
And ask dh if there is nay WD40 lurking in the garage.
