what's the best way to clean, please?
I'm wondering about ironing over kitchen towel or brown paper, but does anyone have better ideas?

You can use cornflour to remove grease from silk, so I'd assume it'd work for satin damask also.

This is the issue with headboards, IMHO. I HATE seeing greasy head stains on hotels' headboards - you see it a lot on suede ones.

Thanks Zebra - will give cornflour a go. Totally agree with you about greasy headboards, which is why I plan to clean this then use a washable slip-cover for the future.

Cornflour (and talc) not effective, unfortunately, but about half stain came away with ironing over brown paper. Reading previous comments about body oil on bedding, I shall be trying washing-soda dissolved in warm water next.
