Can I soak them in something or do I have to do the hard graft with washing up liquid and a toothbrush?

Got any milton lying round? Thats what we use.
Squirt it in and out of any squirty toys to clean the insides as well.

Soak in steralising as suggested above then a turn in the dishwasher on the top rack.
