Help - smell from washing machine/pipes?

Moved house two days ago. Washing machine drum smelt when it was opened and there was a strong smell when my husband connected it to the sink waste, so could possibly be both causing a smell. There is a constant slight drain smell now (not evident on viewing four times) in the kitchen which is stronger after using washing machine. Have put bleach down the sink overnight and machine on a boil wash this morning. Any other ideas for reducing the smell please?

The sink waste also takes dirty water from the dishwasher. There's no smell from that or smell from the sink waste when used.

The waste hose from the washer must loop up so thst the top of the loop is higher than the water level in the sink when it is full. Otherwise dirty sink water fan run into the machine. Perhaps tie the loop to the underside of the worktop or the side of the unit.

Open the pump filter cap and remove all detritus.

Now buy a few bags of washing soda crystals. Run an empty, max temp wash cycle in the machine - no soap or fabsoft. The water will probably go grey and foam up. That is old soap and sludge dissolving. Do it again until it stays clear. You can tip extra water down the powder drawer to increase the level in the tub so it reaches the glass.

Clean the pump again.

Run hot hot hot maintenance washes about monthly. You can put white cotton towels in if you have them, the heat will not harm them and they won't fade. The soda crystals will soften them. They probably have traces of shampoo and bath foam in them so don't need more soap. The soda will dissolve grease from skin creams etc.

you have good advice from piglet.

you can also do the same with white vinegar on an empty wash. I would do both persondally. A hot wash with soda crystals and then a hot wash with vinegar etc.
