To stop it smelling use a solution of bicarb and water - or just spray it with soda water - to wet the area. Then use diluted carpet shampoo and a clean white cloth to clean off the milk. If it has soaked through put a towel underneath to absorb any moisture which may contain milk as you are cleaning. Try to prop up the damp area to allow air to circulate so it dries out quickly once you've finished cleaning it.
