Scotchgard - worth doing?

Has anyone tried scotchgarding their carpets? Is it really all it's made out to be? Would another brand of carpet protector be as effective, and can I DIY rather than getting someone to do it for a lot more money?

My only experience with scotchguard was on my cream sofa covers. I can't say it was worth the money to be honest. Coffee was spilled on one arm and the mark still shows.

we got our cream sofa and chair scotch guarded, seems ok so far although we have only had it for 3 months!

Thanks for the comments so far! The 'licensed Scotchgard applicator' in our area wants £365 to do the carpets - absolute ripoff in my opinion, for a bit of solution that I could easily get myself. I wonder if the fabric spray cans will do the job just as well.
