Gross but removing wee smell

DS2 wet his plimsolls at nursery, they changed him, rinsed the shoes and put them in a nappy bag ready for home time. Now they smell. They are machine washable but it doesn't help. He's only had them a few weeks and I don't want to bin them. Any suggestions?

Machine wash or soak in bio powder. Or sprinkle bicarb in them (when dry) and leave for a bit

Yes, either bio powder/liquid (non bio doesn't work on urine smells) or you can buy special stuff to remove dog and cat urine smells which also work. However if they're three quid plimsolls it'll probably be cheaper to buy a new pair than to buy the special stuff, assuming bio doesn't work.

They are start rite so not cheap ones. He hammers cheap ones to the extent that it works out better to buy one pair of "good" ones rather than replace them all the time. They are out on the line having been through the wash with bio detergent now. Will try your suggestions if as I suspect they are not properly clean.

bicarb ?

Simple Solution- it is an enzyme cleaner. You get it in pet shops and some supermarkets. It removes biological smells such as pee and vomit. Children's as well as pets. It's great stuff.

Dettol in the washing machine. Worked on everything when dd1 potty trained

White vinegar ( about 150-200mls) in the washing machine with washing powder. really good at removing urine smell.

In the end we used the simple solution. The shoes are as good as new apart from slight fading which would have happened anyway. Thanks.
