Help! Cats!

My DH has two cats that have lived here longer than me! I'm not really a pet person but we rub along. However with a 10 month DC things are getting a little more fraught as I'm very clean conscious.

The main problem is our carpets/furniture. We have done our home up over the last six years and finally had the living room, stairs and landing recarpeted a year ago. The cats have already destroyed it. :( There are pulls all over it and the stairs are destroyed. Every tread has been scratched and the carpet on the bottom step has been clawed so much it's now just fluff. I'm so upset because we've worked so hard and it seems everything is being destroyed by these bloody cats! We had a beautiful sofa as a wedding gift from my parents and that has pulls on it too.

What can I do to deter them? I've tried pepper, lemon oil and cayenne but nothing seems to work. I am so desperate I would beg DH to get them rehomed but it would break his heart.

Any ideas please?

Thank you!

You can cover the edges of furniture with double sided tape- it completely puts them off and you don't really notice it.

Get good scratch posts - tree bark is excellent.
