Cleaning stained vinyl flooring

We've black and white checkerboard style vinyl flooring in our kitchen. It gets a good mop with Flash at least weekly and I get down on hands and knees and scrub the edges and anywhere else I need to, but the few white squares directly in front of the sink have started to look permanently grubby despite these efforts and no amount of scrubbing (with cloth, mop or scrubbing brush) makes any difference. It's a big area to floor and the rest of it is fine, so I'm reluctant to spend a fortune reflooring if there's some miracle cleaning product that could salvage it. Any suggestions? Or am I going to have to but the bullet and accept it's just beyond that now?

Okay - is it definitely staining or is it worn and the marked area is actually scratched/scuffed? You might be able to feel if it is scuffed with your fingertips. If it's scuffed then the top layer may have worn off and dirt is sticking to the sub layers instead of washing off.

It might be time for a new floor if you've had it a while and this bothers you.

There was another thread on here a couple of weeks ago where the OP had a stain on a vinyl floor and lots of different things were suggested, including hairspray, Cif and bleach.

Hairspray?! My search didn't turn that up, sorry. I will have another look.

It's definitely not scuffed, it's still smooth, but it is possibly wear from feet - I can see the marks are darker along where the floor boards lie. But I reckon some extreme MN cleaning trick has to be worth a shot before spending £500...

Try some bio washing powder or Stardrops with ammonia.

If it is actually worn, you could buy an anti fatigue mat to cover the spot. Much cheaper than a new floor and comfy underfoot for the washer-upper to stand on.
