How to properly clean a jacket with dog hair from charity shop

Bought a lovely navy blue crew jacket with a couple of real leather patches. The inside lining (is a fleecy type of material and is a bit a lot dusty with some dog hair and hopefully no living creatures.

Label says to hand wash but I am now worried that it won't get properly clean with just a hand wash. Should I return it? How can I clean it thoroughly without damaging the leather bits?

Hmm, how big are the leather patches? If they're just on elbows/pockets, I'd risk a 30deg wool wash in the machine, and be sure to oil the patches with proper leather oil afterwards.

You'll also need to remove as much of the hair as possible before you wash it, of course, otherwise you'll clog the machine and get hairs on everything for months!

Does it say it can be dry cleaned too?

If it was me I would turn inside out,go over the inside with the Hoover nozzle / lint roller, then bung it in tumble dryer on cold for a bit. That would get rid of dust and hair.

Then either dry clean or hand wash to get rid of anything else. Soapy water or dry clean solvent should get rid of most nasties. No reason hand washing should be less effective than your machine, you can just take more care not to damage.

Hoovering the lining is a fab idea!

Why? I buy from charity shops all the time but the condition of the items varies and most charity shops don't sell items that are not clean looking. This was a lovely jacket and a great bargain but it does look a bit yucky, which is unusual. I can still return it if I can't get it properly clean.

If you're worried about anything living in it, wrap it well in plastic bags and bung it in the deep freeze for a day or so, before trying the gentle cool wash
