Tissues - down the loo or not?

So me and DP are doing 2 different things - he flushes used tissues down the loo to dispose of them. Since the idea of them is that they are 'stronger' than loo paper when wet so you can have a good blow of your nose I wasn't sure how well they break down (like wipes) so have been throwing them in the bin. He thinks I'm being disgusting and that as they are full of cold germs they should be flushed away.
So I've decided to ask mumsnet for a verdict!!! Grin

The only things that should be flushed down the toilet are poo and toilet paper. Tissues do not break down when wet in the way toilet paper does.

They should go in the bin. Many germ laden things go in bins with no problem.

Just blow your nose on toilet paper, then you won't have an argument Grin

in the bin. or blow on toilet roll.

I trick I heard from a company doctor (especially useful if you are in an office)

get a large envelope, stuff your used tissues in it. When full, or at the end of the day, seal the envelope and put it in the bin.

At home you can put them in a bag and knot it.

lazypepper · 30/05/2014 17:12

Hmm I would throw them in the bin.

DS leaves them on his bedroom floor throws them in the bin.

DSSs both blow and flush. However they generally are using loo paper - so i guess that breaks down more easily than tissues.

DH worked in a loo roll/tissue paper factory and reckons they are OK to flush as of similar composition. I trusted his verdict as he is an engineer so knows more about this stuff than I do (we'd never flush a wipe etc). But he could be wrong!

bouncinbean · 30/05/2014 17:17

Ah so consensus seems to be bin!
But the news from Ktay's DH maybe does let DP off...

DP used to use loo paper but I find it makes my nose worse so have started buying tissues...

it could be more of a problem if you have a bad cold and are stuffing them down the loo in handfuls.

MamaMumra · 30/05/2014 18:22

I went to a very small restaraunt once and there was a notice by the loo saying toilet paper should not be flushed away but thrown away in the bin - yuck!

MamaMumra · 30/05/2014 18:23

But in answer to your question, generally tissues would go in the bin.
