Washing Machine turning things grey.

I hate my washer. It has a terrible habit of turning white nylon[not pure cotton] things grey. Even though I wash them at 40. I have used liquids and powders, but to no avail. Its latest victim a pristine white bra belonging to my daughter. So annoying. It's a hotpoint, by the way. Any one shed any light on this?

It may be harbouring a sludge of soap, dirt and grease. Give it a service wash - hot hot hot with no powder or fabsoft, but a cup of washing soda crystals. If the water goes grey and foams up it is the old sludge dissolving. Do it again until it stays clean. When you first disturb old sludge it may smell. Scrub out the powder drawer and its aperture, clean the pump filter, and wipe the grooves in the rubber door seal as well.

Powders, and hot washes (subject to the care label), are generally better for whites than liquids and cool.

Nylon is especially tricky because it seems to absorb dirt and go grey. You might try an additive such as Glo-White.

I agree. you need to give your machine a good clean. It should be having a "service wash" regularly. Empty with either nothing at all, or soda crystals or white vinegar or washing machine cleaner. I would do it right now personally so it doesn't get forgotten..

also, are you making sure your only washing whites together? As anything dark in with the whites will turn it grey.

I very much doubt you need a new machine. Wink
