Smelly washing machine

My old machine never used to smell, but this one has smelt almost from day one. I empty the filter thang regularly, run through one of those drum cleaning sachet things periodically, leave the door open all the time, but it smells like a muddy riverbank in there. Why? The clothes smell alright when I take them out, but the drum stinks.

Any suggestions? :)

I don't use conditioner. Will definitely buy powder next time, but find the smell of Ariel overpowering. Any other recommendations for a good powder?

I love ecover and think it washes well and had a delicate but fresh smell.

Op, if you are smelling the washing machine as you sit, are you sure its in the drum and not when the washing machine empties?

Might be worth a handful of washing soda on your plughole, followed by a kettle full of boiling water, and giving your drain a clean?

What drain? The outside drain? That doesn't smell at all. It's definitely coming from the drum.
Is ecover a powder?

ecover has powders as well as liquids.
has a subtle 'clean' smell.

have you checked the door seal? Our Miele used to accumulate gunk and water inside the door seal and that would stink unless wiped out regularly (especially if one of the DC had pooed their pants and put them in the machine without telling me - eeeurgh)

Can I just ask - how much soda crystal should I put in? And in the drawer or the drum?

mousmous · 20/05/2014 13:47

about half a cup.
directly into drum

Thanks!
