Rust marks appearing on clothes?

Looks like rust anyway. It seems to happen during the washing of the clothes. The airer and pegs are not rusty and the washing machine is not yet 3 years old. Anyone else had this and worked out what it is?

Where does it appear on the clothes?

Have you cleaned your washing machine recently? Might be worth putting it on a really hot wash with some detergent and no clothes?

It's appearing quite randomly. I did a service wash on the machine a couple of months ago, will put another one on just in case.

It could be caused by a coin or key (something metallic) caught inside the rubber seal around the door. Have a really good check. This has happened us twice. My P had left Allan keys in his pockets - washed his trusers and the key had got trapped in the seal. It ruined my DD's newclothes and left a stain on the rubber!

I get this on some bath towels: a rusty mark appears then a small hole. It's weird.

Well I've had a good look under the seal tonight and couldn't believe the gunk under there! Shock And it was kind of orangey in colour.

I've wiped it all out and given it a 90 degree cycle - with washing soda crystals (as advised on another thread here). So hopefully that'll do the trick. I'm a bit embarrassed that I've never checked under the seal before. It never crossed my mind!

I've also seen on the other thread (about smelly washing machines) that liquid detergent is evil, so I'll stop using that as soon as I finish my current bottle.

Thanks for your advice all.
