what should I attack with my new steam cleaner?

Yes I am that sad and old that I actually received Lakeland vouchers for my birthday and put them towards a steam mop/ cleaner ( and I am talking about it on a Saturday night).

I have done the kitchen floor and the cooker hood and hob, what other jobs are they good at?

Those are the main places I use my steam cleaner!

I have the x5 h2o one or whatever it's called. I was expecting more tbh. The attachments aren't as good as I thought they'd be and the cloth for the window/garment attachment won't stay on. Everything gets really wet. I am disappointed.

wigglybeezer · 18/05/2014 16:24

So far very good on kitchen grease, soap scum, wooden floors and dirty paintwork (gloss and wipeable emulsion). Really need to use microfiber cloths though.

can't say it made everything super easy although it was brilliant on the floors, but I did like the lack of rinsing and at the moment my house is super dirty as I fell behind on housework when my DS was recently in hospital for nearly three weeks.

One drawback, if you use it the shower cubicle with the doors shut and you have a tendency for frizzy hair you may end up looking like Leo Sayer!

Amazing on kitchen grime. Inside the washing machine drawer is now clean enough to have a party in with Kim and Aggie. The dishwasher looks like new. I have done all windows (but used a window cloth for the final buff). I actually hate hate hate cleaning but have had a lovely weekend de-griming my house.

DH even had a go (using the steam as a duster) at a rather grubby B&Q chandelier (sounds posh but isn't) that hasn't been cleaned in 6 years since it came with the house. Amazing!

Does kitchen cupboards and windows. Upholstery bit doesn't do a lot, however.

Anyone tried on painted wood? That might be next!

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2014 18:18

Which Lakeland one is it please?

thenightsky · 18/05/2014 18:33

Rose, thank you for washing machine drawer feed-back. I think I might go with the Vax now, purely on your reply.

I had to unblock a sink ubend today... I bet it would be fab for that.

Roseformeplease · 18/05/2014 18:58

Didn't get Lakeland - have Vax S6.

Ooh, big pressure on the Vax to perform now. But my drawer is now pristine

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2014 19:05

The S6 doesn't get the best reviews on Amazon.

Aggh, can't decide which one i want.

wigglybeezer · 18/05/2014 19:05

Shark Proffesional, it is on special offer ATM.

it had good reviews on the Lakeland website and as I had vouchers I had to get one there. I will say that the model I got is a bit heavy! I am quite big and strong but it would get tiring for a little old lady to use.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2014 19:06

Thanks, I did like the look of the Shark.

Suttonmum1 · 18/05/2014 19:17

Where does the dirt go? Does the steam loosen it and then you wipe it away with a cloth?

kirako · 18/05/2014 19:33

Yes, the dirt is loosened by steam and wiped away with a cloth. The steam also deals with bacteria, so it's worth pointing the steam cleaner at areas that look clean already add you'll be sanitizing those areas. You can clean Peru much anything except real wood. I stream cleaned laminate flooring for well over 10 years with no issues. It had been well laid and had no gaps.

To add a few more ideas :
Give a quick blast to babies' toys.
You can remove dust from the leaves of yucca plants etc (just hold the steam output a bit further away than usual, so it cools slightly before hitting the plant.)

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2014 19:37

I reckon I could use one on my bike.

thenightsky · 18/05/2014 21:24

lol at kirako stream cleaning the whole of Peru Grin

Ludways · 18/05/2014 21:31

You can come and clean my shower, the grouting needs a good steam clean, I'll PM my address Wink

kirako · 18/05/2014 22:58

Yes I stream cleaned the whole of Peru, all the streams etc but avoiding the real wood. Steam cleaning trees would have been silly! Smile

ZenGardener · 19/05/2014 07:20

I have a Karcher too. I love it!!

Have you steamed cleaned the toilet yet? It's oddly satisfying. I also steam clean our windows and the fridge (I'm not sure your supposed to though) and the upholstery in the car.

I steam cleaned my steam cleaner the other day.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/05/2014 07:47

I so need one. Have woken up this morning to maggots in the cat bowl which I'm blaming dh for. Have thrown the bowl in the garden and I can't bring myself to clean it.

CuttedUpPear · 19/05/2014 08:00

Ok I give in.
I need to buy one, don't I?

mswibble · 19/05/2014 19:43

Oooh this is my kind of thread! I got myself a rather snazzy Polti Vaporetti the other week. It took me an hour to defrost my neglected chest freezer, that was from start to finish - filling and heating up, emptying the freezer, blasting the ice and restocking. Soooo satisfying!
Im planning on doing my mattress and feather pillows next, maybe a little steam in the manky shower cublicle too. I luff mine!

chocolatespiders · 19/05/2014 20:20

Zen - does it get stains out of car upholstery? I may buy one for this reason alone as I have a lease car that goes back soon and it will be cheaper to buy a steam cleaner than pay the bill they charge me!
Do you steam and rub the seats?

ZenGardener · 19/05/2014 22:50

When I did my car upholstery it brought the seats up like new. It's mostly food stains and mud stains thanks to the kids. I was so pleased! Yes, I just ran the steam cleaner over it and wiped with a cloth.

Bagpussss · 20/05/2014 18:47

One of the women on Compulsive Cleaners cleaned her toilet with a steamer, looked like a long hand held stick, since then I have wanted one Grin

chocolatespiders · 20/05/2014 19:29

Thanks Zen- was it just the hose or did you have an attachment on it? Mine is food and mud - pesky children Wink
